Sofia, with it's cozy dining niches, flagstone terrace and deck, is a stylish antidote to the neon casino restaurants. The Greek restaurant specializes in simply grilled whole fish, bathed with olive oil, lemon, capers and herbs, and mezze, with entrees that borrow flavors from throughout the Mediterranean. Think balsamic-glazed lamb chops, and sea bass with couscous and lemon/pinot grigio/basil butter.

"Refined with stucco, elaborate ironwork, elegant stone and lush plant life combine to create an Old World oasis at Sofia in Margate. Step onto the beautiful veranda or warm your toes by one of the four stately fireplaces and soak up the ambience. Sofia's upscale casual atmosphere defines a niche all its own at the seashore."

In it's second season, Sofia is proving an asset to Margate's waterfront promenade, serving classed-up meze, grilled whole fish, steaks and chops. Some choices are very Greek, other aren't at all, but everything tastes as stunning as the beautiful blue sea-glass dishes upon which the vibrant food is served."
"For an inexpensive meal, sit at the circular bar surrounding a giant tree -- yes -- a tree for wine and meze."
"by the glass selection is a bargain."

Ladies, you must check out the incredibly interesting ladies room. The sinks are actual concrete urns, and the water comes from the mouths of inverted decorative metallic fish. Dozens of small crystals are intertwined throughout the wrought iron fixtures.

| ...when you still want seafood, but something other than the usual fried or broiled seafood, or when you want something different and special, where do you go? Allow me to suggest Sofia on Amherst Avenue in Margate. Most remarkable and striking is the atmosphere at Sofia.. Even from the outside of the building with its tile walkways, its arched doorways, and huge clay pots overflowing with fragrant , colorful flowers, you suspect something special is going on inside. Through the many large-pained windows that look out upon the bay, you can easily discern a festive atmosphere within.
Rising up through the center of the circular bar is a tree, yes, a tree; perhaps its an olive tree, whose broad sturdy branches appear as though they are reaching up to the sky as they touch and caress the ceiling above. Siding the bar area is a raw bar that displays in beautiful style delicacies such as jumbo shrimp, colossal sweet crabmeat, bouquets of oysters, and middle neck clams...
On this particular evening I began with the soup du jour which was a cream of asparagus with lump crab meat. The carrot and parsley speckled base possessed a velvety smoothness and was loaded with generous lumps of crabmeat. The asparagus was sweet and flavorful. No two ways about it; this was so absolutely delicious that there wasn't a drop left in the bowl after I had finished.
The salmon special was exactly that: special... Weighing in at 14 ounces, the veal porterhouse was tender, juicy and could quite easily satisfy anyone's carnivorous cravings. Considering the quality, portion size and price, these were bargains.
...At this point, Sofia had been open for only a few weeks, yet already a hip, 30 to 50 something crowd had discovered it as a happening place to meet and greet new and old friends alike. |
